Claiming the rights as Irelands highest stand alone mountain Nephin falls just short of taking Connaught highest by only a few metres.
Erupting out of the Mayo countryside, Nephins unmistakable shape can be seen from counties afar and stands tall over the famous Lough Conn. The north face of this metamorphic wonder is scarred by a giant Glacial Corrie which is a huge recess in the face of the mountain. It is here our sunrise hike takes place.
We depart the Nephin car park in the dark of the morning and make our way up the northwest spur to the summit and back down the northeast spur making a complete circle of the northern face of the mountain.
Summit views from Nephin are among the finest in Ireland due to the stand alone nature of the mountain meaning it attaches to no other mountain which gives true 360 degree panoramic views around country Mayo and beyond.
This hike is rated moderate to strenuous with a steep but safe climb that includes sections of lose rock underfoot. An adventurous spirit is welcomed for this climb. We will walk approximately 8 km and climb a very respectable 750 metres totaling approximately 5 hours on the mountain.
Boots and appropriate hiking clothing are required for this hike for example leggings or hiking trousers, warm body layers for after sunset, rain jacket, water and snacks. Denims or trainers can not be accepted
